Using the Coordinate Calculator
For input of station, object, and item coordinates, Xastir expects coordinates in integer degrees and decimal minutes.
Because users often have coordinates in other formats, Xastir provides a coordinate calculator that can convert between formats.
To use the dialog, enter your coordinates in the three fields in whatever format you have. Leave the UTM zone blank if you are not entering UTM coordinates. Clicking "Calculate" will cause the dialog to compute all the different formats and display them in the text box below the entry boxes.
Note that when entering latitude and longitude, you need to indicate the correct hemisphere. You can either add "E" or "W" to the longitude or use a minus sign to indicate west longitude. You can add "N" or "S" to the latitude or use a minus sign to indicate south latitude. The calculated coordinates displayed will always have hemisphere indicated with a letter.
This dialog box is accessed in three ways: from the Configure Station dialog, from the Object/Item creation and modification dialog, or directly from the "Coordinate Calculator" option in the Map Menu.
When accessed from either of the first two of these, once you've calculated the coordinates with the "Calculate" button, you can click the "OK" button and the values you computed will populate the latitude/longitude fields of the dialog from which you accessed the calculator. "Cancel" will leave those fields unmodified.
